Peru is one of the most enchanting of destinations and should be on everyone’s wish list. Miguel Mudbridri, is our expert tour guide to this colourful country.
MUST READ BOOK OR WRITER
Without a doubt if you are going to travel to Peru it would be good to read one of the country’s most renowned authors, you cannot miss Mario Vargas Llosa, Peru’s only Nobel Prize winner (he was honored in 2010). Most of his books will tell you stories of different characters, most fictional, but which will make you travel though Peru’s past, describing many of Peru’s social and political issues.
MUST LISTEN TO MUSIC/DANCE
If you want a modern take on traditional music using panpipes and flutes and sound with an Andean influence, Lucho Quequezana is a good listen. If you want to hear songs from the heart from a Latin Grammy Award-winning artist, you can listen to Gian Marco. My favourite traditional dance from Peru is the Marinera Nortena, an elegant dance from the northern coast of Peru.
MUST SAMPLE FOOD AND DRINK
For an entrée, Ceviche, for Main Lomo Saltado (stir-fried beef Peruvian style), for a sweet Picarones (Peruvian donuts) – and all this always accompanied by the refreshing Chicha Morada and a Pisco Sour.
MUST DO EXPERIENCE
You must taste the variety of gourmet and traditional restaurants that are available. It will be a truly memorable experience – the variety of restaurants and the quality is truly amazing, Peru has three restaurants that are in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. You will not be disappointed.
No 6 – Central, Lima
No 7 – Maido, Lima
No 39 – Astrid y Gaston, Lima
MUST VISIT TOURIST SITE
No traveller to Peru can go without a visit to Cusco, the Rome of the Americas, and spectacular Machu Picchu. But in reality there are so many sites I would say are must-see: Nazca and its lines, Moche, The Citadel of Chan Chan, Caral, Pachacamac.
Try to get someone to take you to a Paso Horse Exhibition, it is a truly amazing experience! The elegance of the horse and the skill of the Chalan (the horse rider) are a must see. TTW
